Explains Engineering Change Notices, the steps in an ECN Process and the use of Revision Tracking.

To activate ECN functionality, on the Inventory General Parameters screen, change the ECN use for Current, Job or Estimate (which ever you want to be tracked) to All or Individual. If you select all, all items in the item master will be revision tracked. If you select individual, the item maintenance rev track flag must be set to yes for those items that need to be revision tracked. This means that you cannot make any changes to the current , job or estimate operations and materials (based on the parameter settings) without first entering, approving and posting an ECN.

Solution ID = KB-335

Version = All Version

Module : SLMFG

Fact 1 : ECN

Fact 2 : INV

Database : Progress, SQL

Cause

Engineering Change Notices can be used to track changes made to the routing/BOM of an item. Items that are controlled by ECNs become revision tracked items. When using Revision Tracking each revision of the BOM/routing can be stored, with the latest revision being the active or current version.

Fix

Steps needed in the ECN Process to make changes to the routing/BOM:

1. Add an ECN header on the Engineering Change Notice Screen.
2. Add the ECN line Item. The Action would be Add, to add to the routing, update to update an existing Operation or Material or delete to delete an operation or routing. (Add the right revision number. Change Revision cannot be done without a revision Number)
3. After the ECN item has been saved, Do Edit > Update and change the status to approved.
4. Now use the Change ECN status Utility and change the ECN to Approved.
5. Post the ECN from the ECN screen (Activities >Post Engineering Change Notice).

The ECN is effective as soon as it is posted if the effective date is blank or has today's date in it. If the effective date is in the future that date appears on that routing and that Operation/Material cannot be used till that effective date is reached.
